Personalized initial men's ring in 925 sterling silver, a handmade gift

How to Buy a Silver Ring for a Man as a Gift (Even Without His Size)

Short answer: To buy a silver ring for a man without asking him, borrow a ring he already wears on the right finger and measure its inside diameter in millimetres, then match it to a size chart. If you're stuck between two sizes, choose the larger one. Pick a style that fits what he already wears, and order early: our rings are handmade in 3–5 business days, and delivery takes another 2–7.

A ring is a personal gift, and that makes it harder to buy than a watch or a wallet. The two things people worry about are the size and the style. This guide covers both, plus timing for Black Friday (27 November 2026), Christmas and the New Year, and an honest note on returns.

How can you find out a man's ring size without asking him?

Here are some ways to do it, from most to least reliable:

  1. Measure a ring he already wears. Make sure it's from the finger you're buying for, because a pinky ring won't fit his ring finger. Lay it on a ruler and read the inside diameter in millimetres, edge to edge, without the metal. A US 9 has an inside diameter of about 18.95 mm, and a US 10 about 19.76 mm. Each whole US size adds roughly 0.81 mm (source: Ring size, Wikipedia, ISO 8653 and US tables).
  2. Trace it. If you can't take the ring away, press it onto paper and draw around the inside with a sharp pencil, or press it into soft soap or modelling clay. Measure the circle later.
  3. Ask someone who knows. A brother, a close friend or his mother may know his size from a wedding band, a graduation ring or a past purchase. Jewelers sometimes keep that record too.
  4. Compare with your own fingers. Slide his ring onto your fingers and mark where it stops. Then measure that spot with a strip of paper. This method is rougher, but it's better than guessing.

Tricks like wrapping a string round his finger while he sleeps make for good stories, but they're the least accurate. String stretches, and it's easy to pull it too tight or leave it too loose. Our ring size guide explains how to turn a millimetre measurement into a size.

What if you're between two sizes?

Go up. A ring that's slightly loose can be made to fit with an inner sizer or sizing beads. A ring that's too small can't be worn at all. Keep these points in mind:

  • Wide bands feel tighter. Many jewelers suggest going up a quarter to half size for broad signet rings and bands about 8 mm wide or more, because they cover more of the finger.
  • Fingers change size during the day. They swell in heat, after exercise and in the evening, and shrink in the cold. Measure his ring, not his finger on a cold morning.
  • The knuckle decides. If his knuckle is much bigger than the base of his finger, the ring has to pass over it. A ring sized for the base will spin.
  • Dominant hand. Fingers on the writing hand are often slightly larger, so measure a ring from the same hand.

How do you choose a ring style he will actually wear?

The best clue is what he already wears. Look at his watch, his belt buckle and his cufflinks. A man who wears a plain steel watch usually prefers clean lines. A man who collects antiques or reads history may enjoy an engraved Ottoman or Seljuk design. Here are some practical points:

  • Hand size and face size. Larger hands carry a broad signet face well. On slimmer fingers, a medium face looks balanced.
  • His work. If he works with his hands, at the gym, in a workshop or on a site, a low-profile band without a raised stone is more practical. Silver is a soft metal, about 2.5–3 on the Mohs scale (Mindat), so it will show wear over time. Our silver vs steel vs tungsten guide compares the metals honestly.
  • Stone or no stone. A coloured stone like deep-blue lapis lazuli makes a statement. If you're unsure of his taste, a plain or engraved silver face is the safer choice.
  • Finish. Oxidised (darkened) engraving shows detail and looks a little vintage. Polished silver looks brighter and more modern.

Should you engrave a name or initials?

Engraving turns a nice ring into his ring. Initials, a first name, a date or a child's name are the most common choices. Short text is easier to read on a ring face, and you should check the spelling twice. For Arabic names, send the name in Arabic script, not only in Latin letters. There's one honest trade-off. Under our refund policy, personalised and engraved items can't be returned for a fit problem, while unworn non-personalised rings can be returned within 30 days of delivery. So if you're not sure about his size, a non-engraved design is the lower-risk gift.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common ring size for men?

It varies a lot from person to person, so don't rely on an "average". Measure a ring he already wears. Many men fall somewhere in the US 8–12 range, but a guess can easily be off by a full size.

Which finger should a gift ring be sized for?

Size it for the finger he'll wear it on. For a signet ring that's often the little finger or ring finger, and for a band it's usually the ring finger. Each finger is a different size.

Can a silver ring be resized later?

A jeweler can often resize a plain band by about one or two sizes. Rings with engraving or patterns all the way round are harder to resize without breaking the design. That's why it's worth getting the size right first.

Can I return an engraved ring if it doesn't fit?

No. Personalised and engraved items can't be returned for fit, unless we made the ring in a different size from the one you ordered. Unworn non-personalised rings can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with prior approval.

How long does delivery take?

Production takes 3–5 business days, then delivery takes 2–7 business days. Shipping is free worldwide, and duties and taxes are prepaid (DDP).
