The Ottomanseal ring — mührü hümayün — was among the most consequential objects in the empire. A document without the sultan’s seal was not a document; a decree without the impression of the ring in wax or ink had no legal force. The seal was the sultan’s presence made material — it could authorize, command, and bind in his name across distances he could not physically cross. The design of each sultan’s seal was unique: it bore his name, his father’s name, and the phrase el-muzaffer dāʾimā — “ever victorious” — arranged in a composition that was itself a work of calligraphic art.

Fatih Sultan Mehmed — Mehmed II, the Conqueror — took Constantinople in 1453 at the age of twenty-one, ending the Byzantine Empire and beginning the transformation of the city into Istanbul. His seal bore the tughra in its fully developed form: the three vertical shafts, the two oval loops, the sweeping horizontal extension to the left. It was a form that had been evolving since the reign of Orhan Gazi in the fourteenth century, and under Fatih it reached the monumental scale that would define Ottomanimperial identity for the next four centuries.
