Mother of pearl — the iridescent inner lining of mollusc shells, known in materials science as nacre — is one of the oldest decorative materials in human history. Its optical quality comes from its microstructure: thousands of thin aragonite platelets, each around 500 nanometres thick, stacked in parallel layers separated by organic protein. When light enters the surface, it reflects and refracts between these layers, producing the characteristic play of colour — a soft, shifting iridescence that changes with the angle of view. Unlike gemstones, which derive their value from hardness and rarity, nacre is valued for this optical behaviour: the way it holds light rather than simply reflecting it.

In the Ottomantradition, mother of pearl was used extensively in architectural inlay work — on furniture, doors, and Quranic manuscript boxes — as well as in personal objects. Its white, luminous quality associated it with purity and refinement.
