Rutile quartz is clear or smoky quartz that contains needle-like inclusions of rutile — a titanium dioxide mineral that forms as fine golden, copper, or silver threads within the stone during its growth over millions of years. These inclusions, known as sagenite, are entirely natural and unrepeatable: no two rutile quartz stones contain the same pattern of needles. In some specimens the rutile forms dense parallel bundles; in others it radiates outward like light through glass. The effect is simultaneously geological and luminous — a stone that appears to contain its own internal weather.
