The Ottomansultan did not rule from a fixed throne. For much of the empire’s first three centuries, the center of power was mobile — it moved with the army, and at the center of the army was the otag, the imperial tent. The otag was not a field shelter. It was a palace made of fabric and poles, carried on the backs of camels and erected in a matter of hours wherever the sultan chose to stop. The Topkapı Palace, when it was finally built, was in many ways an attempt to recreate in stone what the otag had always been in silk and wool: a space that declared, by its very presence, that this is where authority resides. The sultans from Orhan Gazi to Suleiman the Magnificent understood that the otag was the empire’s true center — not a city, not a building, but a form that could be assembled and disassembled, that could appear anywhere and transform that place into the seat of power.

This ring takes the form of the otag — the tent silhouette, the crescent that rises above it, the layered structure of the imperial encampment — and renders it in silver, fire amber, onyx, and garnet. Fire amber (ateş kehribarı) has been worked in Anatolia for millennia; it is the stone of warmth, of the hearth, of the fire that was kept burning at the center of the tent through the night. The onyx stones are the dark ground on which the amber glows. The garnet carries the red apple — the kızıl elma, the mythic destination of Turkic conquest, the city always just beyond the horizon that pulled the armies westward across a continent.
