The tughra was the official signature of the Ottomansultan — a monogram so complex that it took master calligraphers years to perfect. Each sultan had his own, incorporating his name, his father's name, and the phrase el-muzaffer daima (ever victorious) into an interlocking design of loops, lines, and flourishes. It appeared on every imperial document, every coin, every official seal. To see a tughra was to see the sultan's authority made visible. It was, in the most literal sense, the mark of an empire.

This ring carries that mark. The tughra is worked into the face of the ring in fine relief, set against a natural turquoise stone. Turquoise — firuze in Turkish — has been prized across Central Asia for millennia. Turkic peoples carried it as a protective stone long before the OttomanEmpire existed; it appears in the jewelry of the Seljuks, the Timurids, the Safavids. Its blue-green color was associated with the sky, with water, with the space between earth and heaven. In Ottomancourt jewelry, it was one of the most favored stones.
