About the Zihgir
The zihgir — from the Persian zihgir, meaning “bowstring holder” — was used across the Islamic world from the Seljuks to the Ottomans to protect the thumb when drawing a heavy war bow. Ottomansultans, including Suleiman the Magnificent and Selim I, were renowned archers who wore elaborately decorated zihgirs of gold, jade, and precious stones. The Istanbul Archery Museum still holds records of Ottomanarchers who shot arrows over 800 meters — feats that remain unmatched to this day.
