Surah Al-Inshirah is eight verses long. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, at a moment of difficulty, and its central promise — fa-inna ma’al ‘usri yusra, inna ma’al ‘usri yusra, for indeed with hardship comes ease, indeed with hardship comes ease — is stated twice, in identical words, as if to make certain it is heard. The repetition is deliberate. The scholars of Quranic rhetoric have noted that in Arabic grammar, when a definite noun is repeated, it refers to the same thing; but when an indefinite noun is repeated, it refers to two different things. Hardship is definite — one hardship. Ease is indefinite — two eases. The surah is saying: for every difficulty you face, there are two forms of relief waiting.

The oval face is hand-engraved into solid 925 sterling silver, the surface hand-oxidized so that the recessed letters hold darkness while the raised silver catches light. Around the oval, blue zircon stones are set in the frame — a color that in Islamic artistic tradition has long been associated with the sky, with water, with the kind of clarity that comes after a storm has passed.
