The term caliph (halife in Turkish, from Arabic khalīfa — successor, deputy) refers to the head of the Islamic community, a title held by the Ottomansultans from 1517 onward following the transfer of the caliphate from the Mamluk dynasty to Selim I. The Ottomancaliphate continued until its formal abolition in 1924. For over four centuries, the Ottomansultan-caliph was the symbolic leader of the Sunni Muslim world, and the visual culture of the caliphate — its seals, inscriptions, and ceremonial objects — formed one of the richest traditions in Islamic material history.
