Turquoise has been used in the jewelry of the Islamic world for longer than almost any other stone. It appears in the rings of the Prophet’s companions, in the treasury records of the Seljuk sultans, in the inlaid metalwork of Timurid Samarkand, and in the tile panels of Ottomanmosques — the same blue-green that covers the domes of Bursa and the walls of the Topkapı harem. The stone comes primarily from the mines of Khorasan in northeastern Iran, where it has been extracted continuously since at least the tenth century, and from the Sinai Peninsula, where it was mined in antiquity. The color varies from sky blue to deep green depending on the copper and iron content of the host rock, and the finest stones — the ones the Persian lapidaries called ābī, sky-colored — have been prized above all others.

In the Islamic tradition, turquoise is associated with protection and with good fortune in travel and in battle. The hadith literature records that the Prophet wore a silver ring set with a stone, and while scholars differ on which stone it was, turquoise has been the most common choice in Anatolian and Persian practice. The Seljuk and Ottomansultans wore turquoise rings as signet rings — the stone was considered auspicious for those who held authority and responsibility. This is not superstition but a cultural language: the stone communicates something about the person who wears it, about their relationship to tradition and to the world they move through.

This ring sets a natural turquoise stone in a claw mount on a solid 925 sterling silver band. The band is engraved by hand with traditional motifs — the kind of surface work that Anatolian silversmiths have practiced for centuries, where the tool moves across the metal and leaves a pattern that cannot be exactly repeated.
