The compass has been a navigational instrument in the Islamic world since at least the twelfth century, when it appears in the writings of the Moroccan geographer al-Idrisi. Ottomannavigators used it to chart the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, and the Indian Ocean routes that connected Istanbul to the ports of the Hijaz and the spice markets of the East. But the compass is also a philosophical instrument — it establishes orientation, the relationship between where you are and where you are going, between the self and the world. The Arabic word for direction, qibla, is also the word for the direction of prayer: orientation is not merely geographical but existential.

This ring carries that idea in its structure. It is a double-sided rotating ring — the face turns on a pivot, so that two surfaces are available, each carrying a different inscription. One side faces inward, toward the person who matters most: it bears the names of the couple, the private language of a relationship. The other side faces outward, toward the world: it carries the compass rose and the phrase my direction, my world — a declaration that the person wearing the ring has found their orientation.
