The phrase is Quranic. In Surah At-Tawbah (9:129), after a passage addressed to the Prophet, the verse closes: hasbiyallāhu lā ilāha illā huwa ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa huwa rabbu l-ʿarshi l-ʿaẓīm — Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god but Him; in Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the Magnificent Throne. The phrase ḥasbiyallāh is the compressed form of that declaration — a statement of sufficiency, of trust, of the decision to stop looking elsewhere for what only one source can provide.

In the Islamic tradition, this phrase has been used as a dhikr — a remembrance, a word repeated until it settles into the body and changes the quality of attention. The Sufi teachers who wrote about tawakkul — reliance on God — described it not as passivity but as a particular kind of action: doing what is yours to do, and releasing the outcome. Ḥasbiyallāh is the verbal form of that release.
