The Topkapı Palace treasury holds several Ottomanhelmets that have survived intact from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. They are not the helmets of ordinary soldiers. They are objects of state — worked in steel, inlaid with gold in the koftgari technique, set with turquoise and rubies, inscribed with Quranic verses and the names of God. They were made to be seen, to communicate authority, to declare that the person who wore them stood at the intersection of military power and divine sanction. The helmet was not merely protective equipment. It was a statement about who the wearer was and what they represented.

The most famous of these helmets is associated with the period of Suleiman the Magnificent, but the form itself — the pointed dome, the nasal guard, the cheek pieces, the neck guard — was established much earlier, in the campaigns of Mehmed II, who took Constantinople in 1453 and transformed the Ottomanstate from a regional power into an empire. The word feth — conquest, opening — carries in Arabic a meaning that is simultaneously military and spiritual: the opening of a city is also the opening of a new era, a new possibility. The helmet of the conqueror is the helmet of someone who stands at that threshold.

This ring renders that helmet in three dimensions, in solid 925 sterling silver. The centerpiece is a sculptural representation of the Ottomanconquest helmet — the dome, the guard, the form that appears in the Topkapı treasury and in the miniature paintings of the imperial workshops. The face of the ring is framed with engraved borders and set with blue zircon stones at each corner — the blue that appears throughout Ottomandecorative art, in the tiles of the mosques, in the glazed ceramics of İznik, in the robes of the court painters’ subjects.
