La Ghalib Illa Allah (لا غالب إلا الله): Meaning, Origin and the Alhambra

Short answer: La Ghalib Illa Allah (Arabic: لا غالب إلا الله, often written wa la ghalib illa Allah) means “There is no victor except God.” It is not a verse of the Qur’an word for word, but it echoes Qur’anic verses such as Surah Yusuf 12:21. The phrase became famous as the motto of the Nasrid dynasty of Granada (1232–1492) and is inscribed thousands of times on the walls of the Alhambra in Spain.

What does La Ghalib Illa Allah mean, word by word?

  • لا (lā) – “no / there is no”
  • غالب (ghālib) – “victor, the one who prevails”
  • إلا (illā) – “except”
  • الله (Allāh) – “God”

Together: “No one prevails except God.” The meaning is humility: success, strength and victory belong to God, not to the person who wins.

Common spellings: La Ghalib Illa Allah, La Ghaliba Illallah, La Ghalibe Illallah, La Galibe Illallah. In Turkish it is written La Galibe İllallah.

Is La Ghalib Illa Allah in the Qur’an?

The exact sentence does not appear in the Qur’an. Its meaning, however, is close to two verses:

  • Surah Yusuf 12:21 – وَاللَّهُ غَالِبٌ عَلَىٰ أَمْرِهِ – “And God prevails in His affair.”
  • Surah Al-Mujadila 58:21 – God has decreed that He and His messengers will prevail.

So the phrase is best described as a short statement of faith inspired by the Qur’an, not a quotation from it.

Where does the phrase come from? The Nasrid motto

The phrase is linked to Muhammad I ibn al-Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid Emirate of Granada, the last Muslim kingdom of al-Andalus. According to a widely told account, when people greeted him as al-ghālib (“the victor”), he answered: “wa lā ghāliba illā Allāh” – “there is no victor except God.” The sentence became the dynasty’s motto and appeared on its coat of arms, coins and buildings.

Why is it written all over the Alhambra?

The Nasrid rulers built the Alhambra palace in Granada between the 13th and 14th centuries. Their motto was carved into plaster, tiles and wood in almost every hall, usually in elegant cursive or Kufic script. Today it is one of the most recognised pieces of Islamic calligraphy in the world, and the Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why do people wear La Ghalib Illa Allah jewelry?

For many Muslim men, a ring engraved with لا غالب إلا الله is a daily reminder of humility and trust in God – especially in work, sport or any situation of competition. It is also a popular gift for a husband, father or groom because the message is strong but simple. We do not attribute any protective or magical power to the ring; its value is in its meaning.
