The letter Vav — و — is the sixth letter of the Arabic alphabet and one of the most contemplated letters in the Islamic mystical tradition. The Sufi masters wrote about it at length: it is the letter of connection, the conjunction that joins one thing to another, the waw of wa — “and” — that holds the world together. In its form, it curves: it begins upright and bends, like a person standing and then bowing. The scholars of the tradition saw in this curve the posture of the servant before God — the moment of prostration, when the distance between the human and the divine is at its smallest. Others saw in it the form of the fetus in the womb: the beginning of life, the position of absolute dependence and absolute closeness. The letter Vav, in this reading, is not a letter at all but a posture — the posture of love.
