The Ottomancraft of sedefkârlık — the inlaying of mother of pearl into wood — reached its highest expression in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in the doors and shutters and Quran stands of the imperial mosques and palaces. The craftsmen who worked in this tradition understood something essential about the material: sedef is not a stone in the conventional sense. It is the inner lining of a shell, built up in thin layers over years, each layer slightly different from the last. When light strikes it, it does not reflect from a single surface but from many surfaces simultaneously, each at a slightly different angle. The result is the iridescence that has made sedef one of the most valued decorative materials in the Islamic world for centuries — a material that seems to contain light rather than merely reflect it.

The sides of this ring are engraved with a wall pattern — the crenellated form of the Ottomanfortress wall, the burç and mazgal that appear in the defensive architecture from Rumelihisarı on the Bosphorus to the walls of Diyarbakır. The wall pattern in Ottomandecorative art is not merely architectural quotation. It is a symbol of protection, of the boundary between the interior and the exterior, between what is guarded and what lies beyond. Placed on the sides of a ring, it frames the central stone — the sedef — as if the walls exist to protect what is most luminous.
