The word is Arabic in origin — ʿishāq (عشق) — and it entered OttomanTurkish as aşk, where it became one of the most loaded words in the literary tradition. In classical Ottomanpoetry, aşk was not a simple emotion; it was a cosmological force. The poets of the divan tradition — Fuzuli, Baki, Nedim — wrote of love as something that preceded creation, that existed before the lover and the beloved, that the soul had agreed to carry before it descended into the body. Fuzuli, writing in the sixteenth century, opened his Dīvān with a prose preface arguing that love was the foundation of all knowledge: without it, reason was cold and useless. His most famous line — aşk imiş her ne var âlemde, “whatever exists in the world, it is love” — is not a romantic sentiment but a metaphysical claim.

The Sufi tradition went further. In the writings of Rumi, Ibn Arabi, and Yunus Emre, aşk was the name for the force that drew all created things back toward their origin — the longing of the part for the whole, the reed for the reed bed, the soul for its source. It was not something one chose to feel; it was something one discovered one had always been carrying.
