Zircon is one of the oldest minerals on earth — specimens have been dated to over four billion years, older than most of the planet’s surface rock. It occurs in a range of colors depending on trace elements and radiation exposure over geological time, and black zircon — darkened by natural irradiation — has a depth that synthetic stones cannot replicate: a surface that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, that reads differently in different conditions, that rewards close attention.

In the Ottomantradition, dark stones carried specific associations. Black was the color of authority and gravity in court dress — the color of the kürk, the fur-lined robes worn by senior officials, and of the ink used to write imperial decrees.
