Baki — Mahmud Abdulbaki — was the greatest Ottomanlyric poet of the sixteenth century, and his contemporaries knew it. Suleiman the Magnificent called him the Sultan of Poets. He served as a judge, a teacher, and eventually as the chief religious authority of Istanbul, but what he is remembered for is his verse: precise, musical, and saturated with the awareness that everything passes. His most celebrated poem is the elegy he wrote for Suleiman after the sultan died on campaign in Hungary in 1566 — a poem that begins with the image of the world as a garden that blooms and fades, and that returns again and again to the question of what, if anything, endures.

The phrase on this ring — ne dem bākī ne gam bākī — is in that tradition. It means: neither time is eternal, nor sorrow. The word bākī means permanent, lasting, remaining — and it is also the poet’s name, which Ottomanreaders would have heard as a second layer in any line that used it. The phrase is a statement of Islamic theology — only Allah is bākī, only the divine is permanent — but it is also a statement of consolation: the grief you are carrying will not last, because nothing lasts.
