The double-headed eagle did not originate with the Seljuks. It was already ancient when they encountered it — present in Hittite reliefs at Alacahöyük, in Byzantine imperial iconography, in the heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire. But the Seljuks took it and made it their own, placing it on the stone reliefs of their caravanserais and palaces, on their coins and their tilework, transforming a symbol that had meant many things to many peoples into something specifically Anatolian and specifically Turkic. The two heads looking in opposite directions — east and west, past and future, the steppe and the settled world — captured something true about the Seljuk position: a dynasty that stood at the intersection of civilizations and ruled both.

The face of this ring carries that eagle. On one side, the Bozkurt — the Gray Wolf of the Göktürk tradition, the animal that led the Turkic peoples out of the Ergenekon valley in the founding myth of the steppe empires, the emblem of the warrior who does not submit. On the other side, the seal of Oghuz Kagan — the legendary ancestor of the Oghuz Turks, the figure from whom the Seljuks and the Ottomans both traced their lineage, whose seal represents the continuity of Turkic political authority across a thousand years and three continents.

Three symbols, one ring. Each one complete in itself; together, they form a compressed history of Turkic civilization from the Central Asian steppe to the walls of Constantinople.
