Surah Al-Inshirah is eight verses long. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, at a moment of difficulty, and its central promise — fa-inna ma’al ‘usri yusra, inna ma’al ‘usri yusra, for indeed with hardship comes ease, indeed with hardship comes ease — is stated twice, in identical words, as if to make certain it is heard. The repetition is deliberate. The scholars of Quranic rhetoric have noted that in Arabic grammar, when a definite noun is repeated, it refers to the same thing; but when an indefinite noun is repeated, it refers to two different things. Hardship is definite — one hardship. Ease is indefinite — two eases. The surah is saying: for every difficulty you face, there are two forms of relief waiting.
