The zihgir — the archer’s thumb ring — is one of the most distinctive objects in the material culture of the Islamic world. Its function is precise: it protects the thumb from the bowstring during the draw, allowing the archer to release cleanly and consistently. But in the Ottomancourt, the zihgir was never merely functional. The Topkapı Palace treasury holds dozens of them — carved from ivory, jade, and rock crystal, set with rubies and emeralds, inscribed with the names of sultans. They were gifts exchanged between rulers, objects that communicated the refinement and power of the person who wore them. The sultan who wore a jeweled zihgir was declaring that he was both a warrior and a patron of the arts — that the same hand that drew the bow could also appreciate the finest craftsmanship.

This ring takes that form — the open-backed thumb ring, the slightly asymmetric profile that fits the thumb’s anatomy, the raised face that sits above the knuckle — and engraves it with the Ottomanstandard. The sancak, the Ottomanbattle flag, was the symbol of the sultan’s presence on the campaign: where the standard was, the sultan was. The sides of the ring carry the bow and arrow motif — the instrument that made the Ottomancavalry one of the most effective military forces of the medieval world. The face is set with green zircon stones. Green is the color of the Prophet’s banner in Islamic tradition, the color of paradise, the color that appears in the tilework of the great mosques from Istanbul to Isfahan.
