Kufic is the oldest surviving form of Arabic script — angular, geometric, and built on a grid. It emerged in the early Islamic period in the city of Kufa, in present-day Iraq, and became the dominant script for Quranic manuscripts and architectural inscriptions for the first four centuries of Islam. Unlike the later cursive scripts that prioritized legibility and flow, Kufic prioritized structure: each letter was a precise construction of horizontal and vertical strokes, with decorative extensions that could be woven into borders, interlaced with geometric patterns, or made to grow into foliate forms. This last variant — Kufic mushaʿab, or foliate Kufic — was among the most sophisticated achievements of Islamic decorative art: the letters themselves became vines, their terminals flowering into leaves and tendrils that filled the surrounding space without obscuring the text.

This ring carries the Shahada — the declaration of faith, Lā ilāha illā Allāh, Muḥammadun rasūl Allāh — rendered in foliate Kufic across the face of the band. The ivy pattern that surrounds and interweaves with the inscription is not decoration added to the text; it is the text, extended. The band is solid 925 sterling silver, worked by hand.
