About the Conquest of Istanbul
On May 29, 1453, Sultan Mehmed II — Fatih Sultan Mehmed, the Conqueror — achieved what no army had managed in over a thousand years: the fall of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire. His most audacious move was ordering his fleet to be carried overland on greased logs across the Galata hill and launched into the Golden Horn — bypassing the great chain that blocked the harbor. It remains one of the most extraordinary military maneuvers in history. When Mehmed entered Hagia Sophia, he prostrated in prayer and declared it a mosque — a moment that marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) had foretold this conquest centuries earlier: “Verily you shall conquer Constantinople. What a wonderful leader will her leader be, and what a wonderful army will that army be.”
